A Kick In More Ways Than One

Soccer Day was really a kick (pun intended). It was also a kick-off to the Super Duper Saturday program that CWK hopes to introduce in February as a part of our outreach for parents, families and the community to participate in CWK activities and classes. So far, soccer and Tae Kwon Do will be offered, along with an adult fitness class. Other considerations are Spanish for kids, sign language for children and adults, cooking for kids and yoga for families. We would love to have suggestions for classes or activities that may interest you and your families. If this program is of interest to you, please go to facebook and click on like where you see the Super Duper Saturday heading. Check here often for updates.

We've already been given a great activity/fundraiser idea from one of our very creative parents. And, it's on for the spring...The Super Duper CWK Swap Meet. Don't get rid of that garage junk..."one person's trash is another's treasure." Sounds like a really fun way to raise some funds, right?

Oh, What A Night!

It cannot be disputed that the 2011 California Wiz Kids holiday celebration was the absolute best in our eleven year history of celebrations. It was a fabulous evening for all who attended. The CWKids were dressed to impress and they displayed behavior that matched their appearance.

Dinner was a culinary delight, thanks to the parents of Sage, E.J., Collin and our bartender, Bryce's dad. Ooh...I should not forget my hubby who baked the turkeys. Thanks, honey. The two nice ladies who helped serve dinner were provided by E.J.'s Mom.

At showtime, the performers were true professionals with meltdowns at a minimum. Credit goes to the teachers who designed the show and diligently rehearsed for a week.

The holiday ambiance is credited to Finley's parents who provided lighting and music and to Sage's mom who provided decorations and dedication. And, of course, to the teachers and students who worked very hard on classroom decorations.

Santa's special guest appearance was provided by Sage's grandmother. What a great Christmas present to CWK. Many, many thanks to her.

The professional photographs taken at the event will arrive on Monday.

I hope that all of the CWK families will attend and are looking forward to the Happy Holidays Gala tomorrow evening. It promises to be quite the evening for the students and a real treat for the parents. This is our first celebration done in this way and we decided to be a little different this year for a couple of reasons.

The society of today is on a very casual trend. Especially in California and most especially in Southern California. There are very few occasions to really get dressed up to go out. Getting dressed up to children of today is putting on the Super Hero or Princess costumes and pretty much running amuck. CWK's goal is to help produce well-rounded and productive little citizens who can run amuck with the best of them, but also know when and how to socialize on other levels.

Also, school in general, and especially preschool, is a much more enriching and fulfilling experience for children when parents show interest and participate in school events. So, please join us if you can.

Each year at this time, each CWKid brings and receives a book as a holiday gift. Please have your child bring a hard back children's book gift wrapped and labeled with his/her name only as the giver. This gesture instills the joy of giving and friendship. If the child takes part in the selection and the preparation of the gift, it means even more. They have all been, or currently are, students in Teacher Raquel's enrichment classes. Ariana took the Road to Early Reading class all of last school year. Asa, Che and Malcolm are now in both the reading and the I Like Math classes. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Next month is a very busy one. December is chock full of holiday anticipation, preparation and excitement. This twelfth month also brings the end to another year and lots of things to finalize and tie up. CWK is closing the books on 2011. All tuition and other fees must be paid by December 22, our last day working day of the year. Please remember that tuition is payable through the winter break.

OH NO...Not Again!

I just can't get the winter break thing right.

Okay, please just give me this one last chance.

The policy for winter break is, CWK is closed from Christmas Eve until the day after New Year's day. If, however, Christmas Eve falls on a weekend (as it does this year) CWK will be closed the Friday before.

The FRIDAY before...not the Thursday before (as previously posted). So, in short, CWK will be

open on Thursday, December 22nd

and closed on Friday the 23rd.

Super? Not Always

It's a job in itself to keep abreast of the latest, most popular, most super Superhero. Who is it this month? Is it Batman, Superman, Iron Man...who knows? What I do know, is that the preschool set always knows.

Now, don't get me wrong, CWK loves Superheroes. We think that it's great to have a hero who always does the right thing. Save the city. Keep the train from rolling off the track. Stop the "bad guys." And, of course, there's always bad guys to stop. For this reason, sometimes superheroes can become a problem at school. A favorite outside game is to take turns in the bad guy vs. superhero games that can sometimes get a little rough.

One of the main rules at school is no fighting. This rule is the hardest to enforce when it comes to superheroes. "It's just pretend" is the consistent response when it comes to superhero rough housing. Unfortunately, the resulting bumps and scratches are not just pretend. Have a conversation with your little superhero about pretend fighting. Maybe you can tell him that the bad guys don't come to school.

During the fall and winter months, colds and the flu or flu-like symptoms invade the preschool environment. In deciding whether or not to send your CWKid to school, if you remember these simple rules we will all remain healthier.
If your child…
Has a fever: NO
Has a runny nose running yellow or green: NO
Has a runny nose but its running clear: OK
Has been vomiting within the past 24 hours: NO
Has had two or more loose BMs within the past 24 hours: NO
Has a persistent cough from the chest: NO
Has a dry, shallow cough that in non-productive: OK
Was sent home from school with symptoms: NO for at least 24 symptom free hours
Is asthmatic and is wheezing and/or coughing: NO

Will need assistance with an inhaler or medication dispenser: NO
Because there are no medical personnel on site, we cannot assume the responsibility of making the decision of when and if medication is necessary. CWK does not require that staff members be proficient at using breathing enhancers or medication dispensers. If your child is independent in making the decision regarding the use of medication and/or can manipulate a breathing apparatus on his/her own, you may place a written permission and waiver letter on file.

This month marks the beginning of the winter holiday season...the "getting season" for most of the children we know and love. They are too young to really know that all children do not enjoy the life that they take for granted. With this in mind, CWK has made November the Giving Thanks By Sharing Month.

CWK has adopted a family that must remain anonymous for privacy reasons. For purposes of our students, we will call them the Wiz Kids Thanksgiving Family. We received the family information from a local area hospital sponsoring it. Family members include mother, father, ten year old daughter, and two sons ages six and three.

Each CWK class will receive lists of small contributions of items the family needs or has requested to be brought to school by November 15. Please help us give back by sharing, and as you collect your donation items, have a conversation with your CWKid about children not as fortunate as they are.

The sense of touch can be an exciting realization when you're a preschooler. Unlike we grown ups who have been using our five senses for ages, when you're under age five you still have much to look forward to and experience that you don't even know about, yet. Some of the CWKids got to experience the feel of a pumpkin from the inside out. Although some were excited and quite willing...others (like myself) found it to be kind of "yucky."

The CWKids get a big bonus this Halloween. They get to wear costumes to school twice...once to the Fair on Saturday and again on the official Halloween day on Monday. Halloween day is eagerly anticipated at California Wiz Kids. That's the day that each CWKid brings treats for all the friends in his/her class and the Halloween Party is on!

Parents, when planning your child's treat contribution, please remember that all treats are not sweet. Candy is dandy...but there are other choices. Pencils, erasers, apples, oranges...just think about it.

Suggestion: There are great deals in the party favor section at most party or dollar stores. Buy a couple of packs of party favors (there are usually eight in a pack) and give one favor to each child in your child's class.

If we are to measure the success of our upcoming Book Fair by the response to today's Bagels and Books reception, we're in for a great day on Saturday. The other part of the day also promises to be a winner. We like to call our Food Fair a Taste of CWK.

Our family population represents many different parts of the world, so every year we are delighted by many, many different delicious and interesting food choices. As a mini fund raiser "taste tickets" will be on sale for a dollar each.

Thank you to all families who signed up to donate food items. If you have not done so, yet and you're not the cooking type, please sign up for soda, juice boxes, plastic eating utensils, paper plates, etc., etc., etc. Anything is appreciated.

Children are encouraged to wear costumes to the fair and to march in our annual parade.

At The Pumpkin Patch

Although E.J.'s little face doesn't show it, the CWKids loved the Pumpkin Patch...as we knew they would. They rode the trackless train, bounced in the jumper, checked out the Petting Zoo, figured out the haystack maze and collected a mini pumpkin.

Our first public transportation adventure got mixed reviews from our parent volunteers. Most were positive and our little travelers, on the other hand, loved the bus ride without reservation. But, to be fair, they love any bus ride. I sometime get the feeling that the bus ride is the most popular part of the trip.

Pumpkin Patch Update

It seems that everyone is really excited about the upcoming trip to Shawn's Pumpkin Patch. It's a new thing for the CWKids. In past years we have not made this trip due to the expense of a chartered bus ($350 per trip) to go such a short distance. Our solution, this year, is public transportation. We are thankful for all the parents who have volunteered to help us with this experimental venture.

Everyone should be at the South Campus by 9 a.m. All students should be wearing a red uniform shirt. According to the Culver City Bus website, the adult one-way fare is one dollar (exact change only, bill or coin). There is a possibility that we may have to go in two groups about fifteen minutes apart. If so, we will take the youngest first. Toddler parents may opt to drive and meet us at the Pumpkin Patch if they wish.

Be sure to save Saturday, October 29. That's the date reserved for the CWK Book and International Food Fair. The day is full of lots of food, lots of fun and lots and lots of books. Children are encouraged to wear theirHalloween costumes for the costume parade. Parents, don't be shy, you can wear your costume, too.

Parents are asked to do their parts by signing up to bring a food contribution. The California Wiz Kids population is so diverse, we
should come up with an extra tasty arr
ay of goodies if families will bring a dish native to their home country. There will be a sign-up sheet
at the parent table. Food will be available for sampling for one dollar per serving at the fair.

If cooking is not up your alley, you can sign up for other needed supplies and/or a serving shift at the food tables.

The walk to our local post office was washed away by our sudden bout of wet weather on Wednesday. If our current pleasant weather continues tomorrow we are off to the P.O. to mail our letters.

Busy, Busy, Busy

October is always a busy month for California Wiz Kids. We are still getting settled into the return to school routine, new students are still arriving and adjusting, the excitement of Halloween with the constant talk about who is going to be what is in the air. For all of these reasons, we love this month.

The climax of all this October hustle-bustle is our Annual Book and International Food Fair. This year, the big day will be Saturday, October 29 from noon until 3 p.m. It takes a lot of parental assistance and involvement for this event to be successful.

Bryce's mom has co-ordinated the Book Fair portion of the day for the past two years and she has volunteered to do it again this year.

Selassie's parents have volunteered to assist with the Food Fair portion. We are very grateful for any parents who are willing to give time in order to make the preschool

experience a joy for the students and their families.

The way things are looking these days, our ever faithful, come rain or shine postal system has a pretty limited shelf life ahead of it. Technology, as much as we may love it, finds a way to replace our old stand-bys as we constantly click, text and send.

Next week is SNAIL MAIL WEEK. Your child should arrive at school on Monday with one SASE. In case you've forgotten, it stands for self addressed stamped envelope. Address it to Mom or Dad or both. The CWKids will spend the week learning how the U.S. Postal System works. It will be good to know and use...before it becomes just a fond memory.

Spectacular Sports Friday

Sports Week will come to an end on Friday with classes displaying their skills to one another at the North Campus. For the sake of fun and authenticity, please dress your CWKid in sports attire (jerseys, caps, sweats, etc.)

The Busy Bees (Teacher Lavon and Teacher Noemi) are representing football and soccer. The Leaping Frogs (Teacher Vida) are working on the all-American sport of baseball. Our grown up Soaring Eagles (Teacher Raquel and Teacher Dalila) are playing a mean game of dodge ball.

The Caterpillars (Teacher Alyssa) are keeping their contribution a secret.

Picture Perfect

The CWKids had a different picture day experience on Tuesday. We tried a new photography company (Simply Photography). The photographer held a little informational circle before she started her picture taking. She brought several cameras, both old and new, for the children to touch and hold.

She even took a Polaroid shot...now you know that's old. She talked about lighting, props, smiling naturally and posing. She was, actually, a breath of fresh air.

The Annual CWK Book Fair and International Food Festival will be held on Saturday, October 29. This exciting event is the highlight of our fall season. The Saturday celebration is the climax of a full week of book browsing and story times at school. Book sales will earn CWK points for books and other great school supplies and equipment. Making It Personal

Just because all CWKids are carrying the same backpack does not mean they have to really be the same.

Same but different should be the key.

Check this out...

Get some sticker packs that you really like. Be sure to get some letter and number stickers to decorate your backpack with your name or a saying. Clean the backpack to remove any dirt or grease so the stickers will stick tight, then begin placing the stickers in a design of your choosing. Remember, if the backpack gets a lot of wear and tear, some of the stickers will begin to fade or peel off.

Decorating with paint is an ideal way to add color and personality to your clear backpack. Use paints that will adhere properly to a plastic material, such as 3D or "puff paint." These paints come in small bottles and are easy to squeeze onto the backpack. Before you begin painting, sketch a design. Paint the backpack carefully and then allow it to dry completely before using it or filling it.

Permanent markers are easy to write and draw with. Buy a pack of colored permanent markers at an office supply or craft store. You can buy the markers with different size tips for coloring in large spaces or drawing fine lines. Consider purchasing some of each type. Plan the design before you begin. When you are done, give your work some time to dry before you use it to prevent the markers from rubbing off.

Crossing The Summer Bridge

CWK added the Summer Bridge program as a preparation for the return of the school year. A little work never hurt anyone and the CWKids (with an exception or two) hardly noticed the fact that they were doing school work at "summer camp." If you don't believe it...check it out on facebook.

The Clear Advantage

More and more schools are requiring clear backpacks for students for many different reasons.

Here at CWK we have a few reasons of our own, the most important being health and safety. The clear backpack is both waterproof and dirt resistant. It can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth. Wet clothing can be stored with no problem and will be visible to parents upon pick-up, thus preventing Monday's accident being discovered on Saturday morning...YUK!

Clear backpacks also provide a convenient time saver for teachers who will no longer need to rummage through backpacks for items that may not be there anyway.

The required backpacks go on sale August 22.

Good Will Walk On Wednesday

Childhood, especially at the preschool age, is all about

me-ism. Me, me, me and mine, mine, mine is the common slogan of the two to six year old crowd. The wants and needs of others are, for the most part, not even on the map. As children get older, it becomes unattractive but for now, it's natural. Compassion and empathy are learned traits.

On Wednesday the CWKids are going on their very first Good Will Walk to the Country Villa South Healthcare Center just down the block from CWK. It is a rehab facility for our senior citizens. While there, they will deliver magazines and have conversations with people on the opposite end of their spectrum. They'll sing a few songs and deliver an abundance of happiness without even knowing it. I've checked it out and am assured that the Center is safe for the children and that schools visit often. If you have any magazines to donate please send them to camp with your CWKid.

Camp shirts are required for the walk.
